The disappearance of D.B. Cooper is one of the most infamous unsolved cases in modern history. On November 24, 1971, a man using the alias Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle. What happened next would become one of the greatest mysteries of all time.
During the flight, Cooper handed a note to a flight attendant, claiming he had a bomb in his briefcase. To prove his point, he briefly showed her wires, red sticks, and other suspicious items inside the case. Cooper then calmly demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck to refuel the plane upon landing in Seattle.
When the plane landed, his demands were met, and he allowed the passengers to disembark safely. Cooper kept some of the crew on board and instructed the pilots to fly towards Mexico City at a low altitude and slow speed. Somewhere over the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Cooper did the unthinkable—he opened the plane’s rear stairway and jumped into the dark, freezing night with the money and a parachute.
Despite an extensive manhunt involving the FBI and other authorities, D.B. Cooper was never found. Investigators scoured the forests and rivers of Washington State, but no trace of the mysterious hijacker or the ransom money was ever recovered—until 1980. That year, a boy discovered $5,800 in cash buried along the banks of the Columbia River, with serial numbers matching Cooper’s ransom money.
This small discovery only deepened the mystery. How did the money get there? Did Cooper survive the jump, or did he perish in the wilderness? Why was only a fraction of the ransom found?
Over the years, countless theories have emerged about the identity and fate of D.B. Cooper. Here are some of the most prominent:
